Based in Durban, South Africa, our objective is to
entertain, inform and amuse southern Africa’s
surviving readers with innovative and elegant books
designed to keep them awake and away from the television.
If we’re successful, we might even add to the
limited numbers who turn to the bookcase for stimulation
and pleasure.
The first book from Lizard’s Leap
Press is Cultivating Flavour – Kitchen Gardening
for Kindred Spirits by Toni B Walters, and launches
in October 2008. Cultivating Flavour is the
first complete guide to kitchen gardening in southern
Africa and is a richly illustrated fusion of cultivation
and culinary delight. Six books will follow in 2009,
including an Australian edition of Cultivating Flavour.
The first of these will be Herman Charles
Bosman’s Marico Moments – The Life and
Times of Oom Schalk Lourens, a century of South
African adventure through the eyes of Bosman’s
iconic story teller, Oom Schalk, designed and illustrated
by Peter Badcock. Designer and illustrator of the best-selling
Illustrated Bosman (1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988),
Peter has doubled the number of original illustrations
for this entirely fresh look at Herman Charles Bosman’s
Groot Marico and its place in South African history.
This will be followed by 3 lavishly-illustrated
books for children (of all ages) in the Stories
Fresh Out of Africa series, best-sellers originally
published in English and Afrikaans (1988), written and
illustrated by Peter Walters. First up will be Hironymus,
the hippopotamus who couldn’t swim, followed
by Engelbert, the elephant who wouldn’t stay
grey and Larynx, the lion who lost his roar.
And to round 2009 off, a second southern
African edition of Cultivating Flavour will
be published, followed by an adapted edition for Australia
and New Zealand.
Lizard’s Leap Press will also publish
a range of limited edition prints and artist’s
proofs from Illustrated Bosman, as well as
Marico Moments – The Life and Times of Oom
Schalk Lourens. |
